What can we assume about a work of art without such knowledge? The moai statues of Easter Island, also known as Rapa Nui, are some of the most mysterious structures ever seen (Cothren Stokstad, 2011, p.873). Easter Island is one of the most remote islands in the world. It is 2,300 miles from the coast of South America and 1,200 miles from Pitcairn Island. The moai sit majestically on the coast and face inward. Each statue is different, some have hats and some have earrings. The moai may have been tributes to their chieftains, or to their ancestors.†¦show more content†¦Without this valuable information, we can never really know what the purpose of the moai was. We can only assume what we know from other cultures, when no knowledge of a culture is known. In other culture, monuments were built for a number of reasons, including religious, governmental, or personal motives, such as the Taj Mahal (Cothren Stokstad, 2011, p.771). Nan Madol is located on the island of Pohnpei in Micronesia. It was built between the thirteenth and seventeenth centuries. On top of a coral reef built from black basaltic rock, it is a series of artificial islets. This complex was the ceremonial and political seat of the Saudeleur Dynasty (Beardsley, 1998). It also enclosed the royal tomb. The city was built to house the supreme rulers and all food, water and resources had to be brought from the mainland. All resources were brought to the city by commoners and slaves on the mainland. After the Saudelaur were defeated, the structure was abandoned because of the lack of food and water. Like the Forbidden City, it was a structure built to house the rulers and their court (Cothren Stokstad, 2011, p.799). However, unlike the Forbidden City, only ruins remain of the once great complex. b. Differing Views from William Golding and Jean-Jacques...

William Golding and Jean-Jacques Rousseau had different views on humanity/society. Although they didn’t live in the same time period, their views have been compared to one another. William Golding’s views on humanity which were reflected in the book, â€Å"Lord of the Flies†, stated that all humans are naturally selfish, rude and greedy. Rousseau believed that all humans are naturally good and it was society that corrupted them. I agree more with Rousseau’s argument about human beings being naturally good. Jean-Jacques Rousseau was a French philosopher; he lived during the expressionist time period, where new ideas were being suggested and accepted. He was raised by his dad mostly, and little bit by his aunt and uncle. His mom died just a couple days after he was born. He had five children and they all ended up going to orphanages right after they were born.(Sparknotes) He believed that all humans are born naturally good and society is what contaminates their personality. Rousseau believed in order for the society to be naturally good then there must be freedom for everyone. Act-utilitarianism is the view that the rightness or wrongness of an action is to be judged by its consequences, that is the maximisation of utility - whether or not said action is good or bad (Smart 2000). In the scenario presented, an act-utilitarian would suggest that one is morally permitted to pull the lever and kill one in order to save five lives. However, this moral theory does not compare with the majority of people’s instincts– this suggests that act-utilitarianism is problematic and does not allow for society’s general intuitions. In order to make an objection to act-utilitarianism, I think it is essential to compare two distinct trolley problems and equate both the objection to act-utilitarianism and its moral theory – in doing so, we will have a more precise result and also see the reasons act-utilitarianism is severely problematic. If you are to compare Thompson’s (1985) ‘Bystander at the Switch’ with the given scenario, each case seems to be identical. But people’s intuitions tell us otherwise. The act-utilitarian response, in both cases, would be to sacrifice the one to save five - as it appears to present maximum utility. I believe that if we are to consider this difference and come up with a solution, we will be able to draw an appropriate objection to act-utilitarianism.
